  • Manufacturing & Engineering Internship – C2 heat exchanger fouling for Knoxville plant for the DCM Business

    Project description

The C2 heat exchanger for the Knoxville plant generates a different type of fouling material that is difficult to clean by standard hydro blasting and instead sandblasting is utilized, which is an expensive cleaning method.   The first goal is to identify key indicators (such as process conditions or a specific product) that cause this type of fouling by comparing performance with historical foul-free periods. The second goal is to develop a prediction model that predicts the life-span of the heat exchanger prior to the occurrence of significant fouling where deep cleaning is required.  This model will be utilized to extend campaign cleaning duration that is set constant for the Knoxville plant.

Dow is offering great career opportunities in a global and international environment.
The department that will welcome you is part of our Core R&D, Chemical Science organization. In Core R&D, we work on solutions to some of the most challenging research problems. We do so for all of Dow’s businesses by applying our unique tools and skillsets. The High-Throughput Research Lab in Terneuzen is responsible for developing new and improved heterogeneous catalysts for novel and existing chemical processes. Our lab investigates the challenges that are at the basis of many of Dow’s manufacturing processes. Working in our lab, provides you with an opportunity to directly impact the sustainability footprint and efficiency of many of our production processes and the development of new products for our company. We are looking for enthusiastic and pro-active people to join our team for an internship.

    Project description

Dow has recently announced its plans to create a net-zero carbon emission manufacturing complex in Alberta, Canada by 2030. Also, the Dow Terneuzen site has announced a major investment and research plan to reduce CO2 emissions by ~43% by 2030. This investment will advance Dow’s commitments to reduce carbon emissions on the path to carbon neutrality by 2050.

The specialists in our international R&D organization work to deliver sustainable solutions trying to ensure that we require less energy, generate less waste, and can reuse water or make use of alternative, renewable feedstocks). This project is focused on the synthesis, characterization and testing of novel catalysts for the conversion of partial oxidation of hydrocarbons, using high throughput tools. One of the main drivers in catalyst competitiveness relies on life average selectivity and catalyst lifetime. Robustness to operation conditions, such as gas feed composition, purity or changes in supply are also important factors. These parameters have a strong impact on CO2 emissions and carbon footprint of this process. Hence, the goal is to develop inorganic materials for solid-gas reactions with improved selectivity, as well as understanding their structure-performance relationships with analytical methods to generate new hypothesis. Carrying out bibliographic analysis of the state-of-the-art materials, techniques, and processes, as well as documentation, reporting and presentation of the relevant findings is also a key part of communicating with the stakeholders of this project.

  • Chemical recycling of End of Life mattresses

While the world population is growing, the Circular Economy (CE) is a paradigm shift replacing the End-of-Life concept.  Re-using, re-manufacturing and recycling materials overcomes the challenges of lack of resources and waste disposal in a win-win approach from an economic and value perspective. Flexible Polyurethane foams are used in different applications e.g. furniture, bedding, packaging and transportation. Recycling of any re-usable waste such as plastic or mattresses is one of the main challenges of this era. At Dow by applying chemical processes we aim at recycling polyol from polyurethane flexible foam scraps which can be used in the manufacturing of new foams. We investigate various recipes in a lab scale reactor and optimize the process.
